WEIRDO Releases the Phantastic Music Video for Transcendence

UK-based singer-songwriter WEIRDO unveils his single/music video, “Transcendence,” lifted from his forthcoming debut mixtape/LP, A Mixtape for Heartbreak, slated to drop this fall.

WEIRDO, aka Josh Christopher, initially materialized releasing his demo, “Disco,” via YouTube channel Majestic Casual, resulting in massive buzz and over 1 million plays. WEIRDO promptly vanished, later returning to release two singles, “Butter,” and “Armanio.” Both songs topped Hype Machine and Human Human.

“Sapphire,” a collaboration with Debbie Knox-Hewson (drums) and Pierre Leck (bass), followed. After another brief disappearance, he released “Attitude,” which received inclusion on Spotify’s New Music Friday UK, as well Apple Music playlists, followed by features in prestigious outlets like W Magazine, Pigeons and Planes, DIY, Clash, and Line of Best Fit, along with being named by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1.

Another pause ensued as he went to work, generated music for his project IYES, and “grow up a little bit.” IYES, signed to Sony UK, had a number one hit on Billboard’s Dance Club Chart.

2020 saw him back at it, dropping “Eurotrash,” “Fakin’,” and a few other tracks, producing support from Jack Saunders of BBC Radio 1, Amazing Radio, BBC 6Music, BBC H+W, as well as Vice/Noisey, Wonderland, Complex, and EARMILK.

Prior to “Transcendence,” WEIRDO released “Can’t Without You,” also from his impending mixtape/LP. Beaucoup media hullabaloo followed.

WEIRDO’s sound blends lo-fi production, alt-pop, and innovative electro-pop into songs at once unique and enticing, à la Billie Eilish.

Otherworldly and low-slung, “Transcendence” opens on ethereal colors topped by WEIRDO’s evocative, almost sighing voice, casual yet impassioned. A syncopated rhythm, finessed and crisp, gives the tune a bewitching cadence as iridescent layers of synths, both dark and luminous, imbue the harmonics with ghostly savors of the mutability of love, including betrayal, heartache, and loss.

Directed by Lucas Saidl, the video delivers a fantastic, surreal audio-visual experience.

Infused with numinous textures, a wickedly alluring pulse, and the reflective deluxe vocals of WEIRDO, “Transcendence” oozes with refined surfaces.
