Boxing: Juan Manuel Marquez vs Canelo Alvarez: If you're afraid, why get into boxing

Juan Manuel Marquez has been one of the harshest critics of Saul "Canelo" Alvarez.

Now, "El Dinamita" has criticized the boxer for not giving David Benavidez a chance.

For Marquez, if someone is world champion, he should give a chance to different boxers to prove that he is the best, otherwise, there is no point in being in the ring.

Juan Manuel was asked directly about the reason why he believes Canelo has not wanted to face Benavidez.

"If you're afraid, why get into boxing?" Marquez told Mexican media outlets.

"[Benavidez-Canelo] would be an interesting fight, Benavidez has what to make a competitive fight for Alvarez."

Marquez doesn't see Ryder as a tough opponent for Canelo

On May 6, Canelo will face John Ryder at the Akron Stadium in Jalisco to defend his supremacy as unified super middleweight world champion.

Although the Briton is the mandatory opponent by the World Boxing Organization, "Dinamita" thinks he is a B-class opponent for the red-haired fighter.

"Canelo is coming off a wrist injury, they are seeing how he comes back," Juan Manuel said.

"I think he doesn't risk much against John Ryder, who is a regular fighter, mid-level down.

"It is an important point to gauge how Canelo feels, how his recovery is going, it is his right to do so."

Marquez criticized Canelo's lack of commitment

Canelo Alvarez has stated on different occasions that he does not like to face Mexican boxers, but for Juan Manuel Marquez you have to prove that you are the best, regardless of the nationality of your opponent.

"Dinamita" assured that if Canelo thinks that Benavidez is not at his level he has to prove it in the ring.

"When you are world champion you have to face whoever, be it Mexican, European... if Benavidez hasn't fought anyone..." he concluded.

"I'm going to give my point of view: as champion I would show the world that, if Benavidez hasn't had opponents like me, then it would be an easy fight, because I show that he is not an opponent that is at my level and I can beat him.

"I am at a higher level and I will show you that you will not beat me."
